Built-Up Roofing (BUR)

The Build-up roofing (BUR) has been in use in the U.S. for over 100 years, especially on low slope roofs. BUR is built by alternating layers of foundation and asphalt and finished by a top layer of stone or gravel. They can entirely adhere if used directly to roof decks or insulation. The continuous dense surface does not need joints or closures, excluding the weakest area for leaking.

You can determine the number of layers that will be installed accordingly with your needs and budgets. When in the installation process, you should consider that more layers give extra weather protection. The asphalt part it’s commonly been made off Ballasted, which provides an excellent finished surface and has a fire retardant effect.

The last layer is made of stone and preserves the underlying floors from UV rays, excessive heat or cold, and wind destruction. You can include a cover made of gravel to be more aesthetically appealing. If correctly installed and maintained, a built-up roof can last 40 years.
